HAIR EXTENSIONS, DESIGN, NOT JUST APPLICATION

EXAMPLE OF "DESIGN" NOT INSTALL 

Here are some examples of Hair Extension "Design" not just application or install.  When Hair Extensions are added to natural hair, the strands must be added with the individual design as well as needs & lifestyle of the client.

Every time a new client comes to me for Hair Extensions, I first talk with them about their lifestyle, needs, hair care routine as well as the hair extension style they have in mind.  This is important to find out who the client is & if the idea they have for their hair extensions will work well with their individual lifestyle. 

Example:  A client comes in who is a swimmer.  She wants long, thick Shrink Link extensions.  Information about the extension technique choice must be given to the client to inform her of the ability of Shrink Links.  Not the correct technique for a swimmer.  Shrink Links do not hold up well with lots of water exposure as well as chlorine.   The client may have read about Shrink Links or has a friend (non swimmer) who has them & does not know how they work.   She simply wants what she has heard about with out knowing what is right for her individual needs.  As the expert, it is my job to inform her & educate her as to the correct extension technique that will work best with swimming.  Keratin Bonds are a good choice.  However, there are other considerations when deciding what is best.  Is the hair fine or fragile?  Is it colored?  These are all considerations the Stylist must share with the client & know herself, to provide the client with the best hair extensions for the money she is spending.

AMAZING WHAT EXTENSIONS CAN DO!

Being knowledgable & confident when talking with a client is as important as the actual extension application design.  A client wants to trust her stylist & deserves one who is confident in her knowledge & education.  Listening is such a very important quality to have as an artist/stylist.  So many stylist don't know or even care to listen to the client.  That is sad & a big reason why stylists can have a bad reputation.  Listening to clients is what separates the successful stylists from the stylist who jump from salon to salon.

One of the comments I hear the most from my clients is my confidence. They all have told me that when they first met me they felt my professionalism & confidence.  That alone gained their trust in me.  Plus, after I am done with their hair, they see why I am confident.  I not only am the best at what I do, I also love it!  If at anytime something does not turn out right, regardless of why, I always fix it.  Most of the time for free!  Standing behind my work & being, well I will admit it, 'obsessed' with making women look & feel beautiful is a huge reason why I have had such a long and consistent career.  Even out of the Studio's now, for the most part, I am still able to generate a full & return clientele.

With all that said, please do your research when thinking of getting Hair Extensions.  Be sure the stylist is certified & experienced.  However, remember someone can have all the "paperwork" that says they are qualified, yet listen to your gut.  If you have a feeling right away that the stylist is confident & sure of their abilities, that may be the best factor in finding a talented Hair Extension Designer!

BEST MAKEUP BAG ITEMS!

Okay, I am not the best at blogging regularly, but I am an artist after all & therefore 'beat to a different drum'.  Please hang in there, I promise it will be worth it!

Now that the Holidays are here, lots of us will be traveling.  Now travel is not as carefree as it once was, so lets at least make our makeup bag needs simple!

I use the zip plastic bag bed sheets come in!

Here are my tips for what to keep in your makeup bag for both travel and your purse.

TRAVEL MAKEUP BAG:
-A safety pin.  Always pin a closed safety pin to the outside of your makeup bag.  If you loose a button or a necklace or bracelet breaks, it can save you!
-Vitamin E Stick or Capsules.  Keep a Vitamin E Stick on your night stand whether home or away.  Important for travel by air because skin dries out quickly.  Use around your eyes, on your lips & rub into cuticles and elbows too.  Use that safety pin to pierce the tip of a vitamin E capsule, squeeze & apply to desired areas.  No one wants to look at dry, flakey elbows!
-Face cleaning wipes.  Great for quick makeup removing when tired & staying up later then usual.  Also use to shine your shoes (or your man's), clean up a spot on your clothes & to freshen up!
-Use snack size, sandwich size & gallon size Zip Lock Bags.  Use the snack size for Q-tips, earrings, & travel size makeup brushes.  The sandwich size works for sealing liquid foundation.  Never do you want to have it break or spill on your clothes. Pad with makeup sponges & travel tissue packs.  Gallon size bags are great for mouthwash, body lotion, deodorant & anything that can open or spill.  Tuck all of the zip lock bags in a fold up, hanging makeup travel organizer.  Between the zip locks & the zipper pockets in the travel bag, you'll arrive with your makeup in perfect, organized shape!
-Keep Q-tips in your travel bag.  Pointed Q-tips are handy for lining eyes or smudging eyeliner thats too heavy or stark.  Use also for correcting lipstick.  The point makes it a breeze to fix a small mistake without messing up your lipstick.
-Keep a few twist ties with you.  Yes, the ones on loafs of bread or that come with your new trash bags.  Clear or black, even gold are best.  Use for changing the length of a necklace to make it look different while traveling. Cuts down on lugging around lots of jewelry.  Wear a necklace long during the day, then thread the twist tie thru your necklace, tighten, shorten & have a whole new look for night!  *Be sure to cover the twist tie with your hair or a scarf!
-Visit the Drug Store.  Grab up all the travel size items, 2 each.  Make one bag (gallon zip lock) with one of each to keep in your travel bag always & one to use right away.  That way your covered & have what you need on hand.  Don't forget the razors!  I keep inexpensive ones in every travel bag I have!

PURSE:
-2 shades of lipstick, 1 lipgloss.  Lipstick in a lighter shade & one in a darker shade.  1 lipliner in a neutral color to go with both lipsticks & a tinted gloss to use alone or over lipsticks.
-Compact of touch up powder.  Be sure the color is translucent or matches your skin so you don't turn orange.  Replace the puff or sponge in the compact often.  Use the mirror for touch ups & to check your teeth for random bologna or bread!

Clear is best to keep in your purse!

-Small pack of dental floss.  Refer to former tip above.
-Pack of tissue.  For everything!
-Concealer Pencil.  A pencil concealer won't spill or ruin your purse if it falls out of its bag.  Carry one only if you need to use it during the day.  Don't carry it if your skin is clear.  Too much concealer can cake up adding it during the day.  Use with care and a light hand.

FREE MAKEUP GIVE AWAY!! EYESHADOW GUIDE FOR BROWN EYES TOO!!

Did you know brown eyes are the most common eye color in the world?  I have brown eyes too even though I am a natural blonde.  So that combo is rare!  Don't worry though if you think having the most common eye color makes you common.  It doesn't have to!

Brown eyes have been tested in studies & found that most who look at photos of attractive people (men looking at photos of women & visa versa) with the ONLY change in the photo being the eye color, the face stays the same & the tester is asked to choose which "look" they find the most attractive or friendly.  The study put the same 6 or so faces for testers to choose from, without knowing what, if anything, was different about the faces. All test subjects, male & female choose the faces with brown eyes!  They did not know the only change in the photos of the people was the eye color.  Yet they all choose brown eyes!  When asked why, & still without knowing what was the change in each face, they said the photos with the eyes changed to brown were "warmer, kinder, friendly, approachable".

The experts who put on the test found the reason the testers that viewed the photos of the same faces with only eye color changes choose brown eyes, is because the black color  pupil of the eye is less visible in brown colored eyes.  In blue, green or hazel eye colors the pupil contrast was stark & therefore when the flash from the camera & the lighting used in taking the test subjects photos caused the pupil to contract, it showed more in lighter colored eyes.  A constricted pupil stands out more & appears hard or mean to most & they don't even know why.  None pointed out the pupil size and contrast as why they felt constricted pupils looked less warm, they were judging by the faces alone.  Brown eyes conceal the contrast between brown eye color and the black pupil.  So when the pupil in a brown eye is constricted, it is not as noticeable & therefore brown eyes appear warmer and kinder.

Great news for those of us blessed with brown eyes.  We are not common, we are perceived to be kinder, warmer and more approachable!

That being said, lets move on to eyeshadow tips for brown eyes:

1- Choose neutral colors.  You can & should accent with color, but only accent, not over entire eyelid!

2- Apply a concealer or eyeshadow primer all over lid, lashes to under brows. BLEND! Apply a light dusting of powder with a large soft face brush.

3- Choose a beige, off white or champagne color & blend across eyelid completely.  Work some of the light shadow into the tear duct area.  Use a Q-tip to place it there.  More control & less fall out of shadow on the face.

4- Take a medium size shadow brush, dip into a brown, rust, gray, wine, deep green or dark navy blue eyeshadow, blow off excess (&/or place a square of toilet tissue, folded in half under eye from the mid point outward, slant it up) and apply from the outer part of the eyelid inward.  Keep that same one direction of application.  Not back & forth, only inward strokes, from outside the eye towards inner.   Lighten your pressure as you reach the mid point of the lid.  You should press harder on the outer eyelid, blending upward & soften your pressure coming in.  This technique allows the color to deposit darker on the outer part of the eye and blend to a softer shade towards the mid point.

5- Grab the first shadow brush used for the first light color & without adding more shadow, just blend over the entire lid to blend the two colors.  Use a soft touch & feather strokes!

6- Line upper eyelid with a black, dark brown, gray, dark navy or the same tone chosen for eyeshadow color.  If using an eye pencil, warm the tip by stroking it on the back of your hand, this warms the pencil a bit & helps it glide across lid better on your lash line.  Blend with a thin, short bristled eyeliner brush. Use brush to blend the pencil color a bit past the outer lash edge of eyes.  If using a liquid liner, use a liner brush, not the wand that comes with the liner.  You'll have more control.  Take the liner off the applicator tip with your short bristle eyeliner brush & line at lash roots, starting on the outside working in.  This gives a stronger color to the outside (cat eye) of the lid and softer inward.  Blend!

7- Take a pointed Q-tip (be sure its pointed, not regular) dip the tip into your selected eyeshadow darker color (you may want to dampen the tip of the Q-ip slightly with water) & starting from outside, gently drag the color inward to the halfway or 3/4 way of lower lashes.  Remember to lighten your pressure as you move inward!!  That gives you a stronger color along the outer lower lid & softens the color deposit as you move in towards the tear duct.  Do not go all the way!  Turn Q-tip over to the unused side & use the clean tip to blend your line.  Pressing softer from the outer edge & increasing your pressure as you blend in.  This is reverse of the upper liner & darker eyeshadow application blending!  This technique leaves a darker color on lower lid lash line on the outer edge of eye & lightens the color inward.  Creating a larger eye look in a very subtle way!  Its all an illusion of light & dark contrasts to create a larger eye.  Lining upper and lower lids with black & no blending provides no contrast & looks harsh & makes eyes appear smaller & squinted.

8- Grab another pointed Q-tip & dampen it a tiny bit, dip the tip in your first lighter color shadow & gently blend your lower lash liner color from the mid point inward.  This blends the darker lower lash shadow liner & gives the illusion of no stopping point for the darker color, which looks stark & awful, & seamlessly blends the darker lower shadow right into the lighter shadow.  Blend the lighter color shadow on your pointed Q-tip right into you lower tear duct area.  Looks great and youthful, plus really opens the eyes!

9- Curler lashes & apply black mascara to upper lashes (coat both sides of lashes, on top & under). While it dries, apply eyebrow pencil or shadow to brows.  Be sure the color you select is one shade lighter then you hair color!!  Creates a youthful look!  Blend, define & Blend again.  Now on to mascara on the lower lashes using a Dark Brown mascara!  This is a slight difference but creates a fantastic eye opening look and contrast!  No more then 2 coats of each!

10- You are done!  Be sure to check your face and under you eyes for eyeshadow fallout.  Clean up with a clean angle sponge moving in an upward diagonal motion along the outer edge of eyes.  This gives a defined, lifting, clean effect.

I hope my detailed instructions helped!  I have read too many "makeup application guides" that tell you virtually nothing about how, what or where to apply products!!  I will be giving more variations of colors for making the most of brown eyes soon, as well as other eye colors!

Career Fact- I was an originator of the "lighter color applied to the tear duct area".  I did it before anyone else back in 1990 to create the wide eyed & brightening look without having to line the inner lower lid.  I created it for a certain celebrity I worked on due to her sensitivity.  I also used this brightening trick on my brides.  I realized the white liner on the inner lower lid wears off fast & ends up as eye matter globs!  Brides tend to cry & the tears really wear off inner lower eyeliner, so that is why I placed the brightening color in the lower tear duct area, on the skin, not the inside of the eye.  Looks so amazing with a white wedding gown & in photos!!  Now all do it, but it was me who started the trend! Colors that look great applied to inner, lower tear duct area are: Golds, Silvers, Frosty Ice Blues, Lavenders, Soft Matte or Frosty Pinks, Champagne Shimmers & naturally Whites.

BEAUTY LOOKS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Well, its now almost October & soon Christmas will be here!  Have you decided on a new look for the upcoming Holidays?  It is the time of year when we see friends and family we rarely see.  Why not greet the season & your friends & family with a new fresh look!

In this tough economy perhaps a change of hair or makeup is all you can afford.  If your'e lucky enough (or to the point, hard working enough)  to have the money to invest in some new wardrobe pieces, start with a pencil skirt.  This is a big trend for the season!  The skirt can be conservative or have a slit all the way up your thigh!  Its up to you & how you plan, rather where you plan to wear it.  The office would not be a good choice.  For a pencil skirt suitable for work, try one with a pleat in the back.  Another trend is boots that fit loosely around the calf instead of fitted.  Great for those who have larger calves!  Pair the pencil skirt with a new pair of boots!  However, be sure to pair the skirt with a loose fitting blouse or sweater that skims the waist.

If you are like most of us, adding to our wardrobe is not an option.  Luckily a makeup or hair change is affordable to virtually all of us!  I love Hair Extensions!  Yes, I know they are an investment but there  are options.  Clip on synthetic Hair Extensions are an affordable choice & really enhance & change your look & without the long term commitment or costs.  If you are looking for a more permanent Hair Extension, be sure to do your homework!  If someone is offering a cheap price for either their time for application or their Hair Extension or both, RUN!  The old saying, "you get what you pay for" is all too true!  When it comes to your hair & scalp, why would you trust a cheap price?  Realize that a experienced, licensed, certified & trained stylist spent a lot of money & time becoming an expert!  If a stylist is offering a lesser price, that is a huge indication the stylist is either not licensed, not certified, not professionally trained or worse, all!  You wouldn't trust a doctor or a dentist who offered a cheap price. So why do so many trust a cheap price when it comes to your hair?

The truth is you really do not get something for nothing.  You end up paying much, much more to try to repair the damage  the cheap price got you, if you can even repair the damage!  The lesson here is, do your research!  Ask questions.  Trust only an experienced stylist who has references.  If the price for Hair Extensions is too good to be true, well its not...true that is!

Lastly, lets talk about makeup.  So many women I have worked with, yes celebrities too, have no idea how to apply their makeup!  They tell me how they have learned one look & are still wearing it!  Going to work, same look, going to the store, the same look, on a date, the same look.  Boring!!  You should be aware that men love & need variety & also are visual creatures.  Does that mean your man will leave you?   No!  If a man is truly a man & loves you, he will not leave you just because he is growing bored with your look.  But wouldn't it be great to treat both yourself & your man to a variety of looks?  I hear virtually daily, how much I change my looks.  People comment on my appearance all the time!  I change my eyeshadow colors, my eyeliner application, my hair.  These changes energize me and make me feel more attractive.  Yes, because I am a professional it is easy for me!  With a few small changes, a bit of time and practice, you too can learn at least 3 different and most of all, flattering looks.  All you need is the time to practice, its worth it!  Try going very soft on your eyes, perhaps just a bit of brow pencil, a taupe eyeshadow & a coat of mascara with a dramatic lip.  Red, all sorts of shades, wine, browns, deep plums, all look fantastic and finished with soft eyes.  Especially with groomed, shaped, enhanced eyebrows!  The reverse is a bit harder to master.  The dark, dramatic smokey eye, paired with a nude lip.  The lip is easy, it is the eyes that can look horrible if done wrong and not blended.  So take your time, practice with a friend.  Its fun & after you get the hang of a few looks, add a few hairstyle changes & see how the world & your man look at you differently!!

A SHORT INNER BEAUTY REMINDER...

Being a dog (animal) lover is a big, important part of my life.  I have never had a moment since I was born without a pet.

 Caring for these sweet, innocent & sadly at our mercy, little creatures is a part of me.  I truly believe and know animals have a soul & feel emotions.  They feel physical pain as we do.  It drives me insane when I hear people remark that their dog is "fine".  "Oh, he's fine outside in the over  one hundred degree temperature.  He has a water dish & shade most of the day in the corner."  Yeah!  A tiny bit of shade in a corner only during certain hours of the day & a hot, stale, dirty dish of water!!  That sounds "fine" to me!  NOT!  Or the other end of the weather, cold!  The same goes for very cold weather!  Just because a dogs breed is Husky, for example, does not mean that this dog who was raised in say, Southern California is fine all day/night outside during winter in Big Bear, CA!!  The dog is only used to the environment they lived in.  It's not a magic switch the dog can turn of or off!  Some people actually believe that a dogs fur coat is magic.  It keeps them cool in hot weather and warm in cold, no matter how hot or how cold!  Really??!! True, a dogs fur coat is there to insulate, but not to extremes. If it is too hot for you, yourself to stay outside all day with little to no shade and a water bottle with warm water, then the same goes for your dog!  Cold weather the same.  If you get too cold with your thick winter coat & hat on outside, so does your dog!  Dogs don't have shoes or gloves either.  Yes, they have thicker skin on their feet then we do, but in between their toes is hairless pink, skin!  No fur!  The skin on their feet is not so tough as the soul of a shoe.  They cannot take walking along the street or sidewalk on very hot days!  Cold days as well.  We need to use our common sense!  I really cannot stand to see some thoughtless person on their bike pulling their poor dog along with them!  The person gets to coast and sit down.  The dog (no matter how active the dog is) must run the entire time with no break like sitting or coasting on a bike.

My point, and I do have one, is to remember your inner beauty and think of others (animals too) in the same manner you think of yourself.  If a comment you are thinking of saying or writing sounds mean or hurtful to you, do not say/write it.  If the weather is extreme one direction or another & you, yourself cannot take much time outside, then neither can your dog!  It is not that hard to think of others.  I believe throughout our lifetimes the kindness of our actions (key word: 'actions') have a direct effect on our beauty (male or female).  I'm a firm believer, and have seen the proof over the years in celebrities I have worked with(as well as others I have known), 'Pretty is as Pretty DOES'.  You will without a doubt, end up with the face you deserve.  Aging aside, the evidence is clear in the expression, the eyes and we continue to form the bones in our faces until age 25.  So 25 and up is the time to start 'facing up' to who you are, what you will be and the steps (actions, not cosmetics) you need to decide to take to 'face' yourself through the years.

MY THOUGHTS ON VARIETY IN HAIR & MAKEUP LOOKS

Have you ever noticed women who change their hair and makeup looks daily?  Or women who look the exact same every single day.  The former type of women I definitely prefer.  

Change is a part of life.  Embrace it!  By changing hair and makeup looks I don't mean crazy color hair or extreme makeup looks.  I mean small changes.  One day wearing your hair up in a loose bun, the next wearing it down and loose.  While changing your looks, take in to consideration the weather, the season, where you are going & what hair styles transfer nicely (without washing it) into the next look.  Example: Wearing your hair up in a bun transfers well into wearing it down the next day without having to wash it.  Most hair types take on a nice wave while up in a bun & look great the next day!
Washing your hair everyday is not healthy for it unless you've worked out hard and sweated or it smells like smoke.  Then washing your hair the next day is needed.

Selecting a makeup look to compliment a hair style is also key.  Wearing your hair up with a dramatic makeup look tends to look over done.  Unless your going to compete in a Beauty Pageant!  On an average day going to work, wearing you hair up in a bun should be paired with a soft, natural makeup. Sometimes hair up in a bun can look formal, by pairing it with a soft makeup look it goes well for most work places.  There are many styles of wearing your hair up in a bun.  I like to wear a sleek, low bun at the nape of my neck & compliment it with a classic makeup look.  Defined eyebrows, a layer of soft, matte beige eyeshadow across the entire lid and a swipe of light brown or gray shadow at the lid, extending out.  A strong, defined black liner across the upper eyelid & extending out past the lash line a bit.  Two coats of black mascara to curled upper lashes only, a hint of blush and a matte red or darker lipstick.  For me, this works well.

As a Makeup Artist its natural for me to recommend most women get a professional makeup lesson.  Making sure to hire a real pro that will truly teach a few looks & not focus on selling a ton of cosmetics.  I do not recommend the makeup counter or MAC.  Most are not truly trained & are under pressure to sell to you more then teach.  Try your hair salon & see if they have a makeup artist.  They are safer choices for teaching looks rather then only pressuring you to buy.  Investing in a quality makeup lesson is well worth it!  Do your homework in finding the right artist to teach you.  Ask friends, your hair stylist or your favorite Spa.  Included in your lesson should be at least 2 looks.  Day & night.  The artist should work with the makeup you already own.  That way you learn to use the tools and makeup you have without purchasing more, unless you really need it.  Sometimes I have found in teaching, that women have all the wrong tones and shades.  I go thru their cosmetics with them & keep what is best and works & recommend others.  Investing in a quality makeup lesson is worth it.  You can have great teeth, skin, be in good shape, have good fashion sense & still mess all these things up with boring one look makeup everyday and night or with the wrong colors or application!  Men may not know what the problem is, but they do see how something is not working.  Badly chosen or applied makeup can cause others to have a bad or wrong impression of you.  Beautiful, blended makeup tells the world you are a women of style and class.

So go thru your cosmetics, try on a few looks paired with different hairstyles.  Have a good friend over to give you advice or an opinion or help each other by doing this together!  Take a few pictures with these 2-4 different looks, both hair and makeup and see what looks best.  Pictures are a great way to see yourself more as others see you.  Be sure you have proper lighting!  The next weekend or weeknight you have time, try out some looks.  Experiment!  When you find out how fun and easy it can be to change your looks, you'll feel better, more confident & others will admire your style(s)!!
